A few years back, sea shanties experienced a surprising resurgence in popularity. For example, songs like this popular shanty captivated millions, likely due to people yearning for a sense of adventure and community during the global lockdowns caused by the pandemic. This cultural moment inspired many to explore these traditional maritime songs, which were originally sung by sailors to coordinate efforts on large ships and lighten their strenuous tasks.

Inspired by this phenomenon, we once created a sea shanty generator as a class project. Our tool used regular expressions (regex) and pattern matching in Python to automatically generate shanties by combining different lines and stanzas. This web-based generator seeks to replicate that experience, allowing users to craft their own shanties with just a click. Whether you're a fan of maritime history or just looking for a creative diversion, our generator aims to bring a piece of naval tradition into the digital age.

The Sea Shanty Maker has a total of 7,980 unique verses possible. This large number of combinations ensures a high degree of variety and uniqueness in each generated shanty, making the generator a fun and engaging tool for creating traditional sailor songs.
